Police: I-78 motorcycle collision in Somerset County leaves one dead - UPDATE

Maurice Smith, who was driving one of the motorcycles, was charged with driving while intoxicated, according to state police. A Pennsylvania woman who fell from a motorcycle after an initial collision died after being run over by another vehicle.

Two motorcycles collided on Interstate 78 in Somerset County early this morning, leaving a western Pennsylvania woman dead, according to New Jersey State Police.

A couple on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle were traveling eastbound in the center lane about 1:30 this morning when they were struck by a Suzuki motorcycle as it was passing them, state police spokesman Sgt. Stephen Jones said.

Maurice Smith, the driver of the Suzuki, was charged with driving while intoxicated, Jones said. Further criminal charges may be pending.

Nicole Widener, 45, of Stewartsville, Pa., a passenger on the Harley-Davidson, fell off the bike after it was struck, Jones said.

She was run over by another vehicle and killed, Jones said.

Paul Shelley, 56, also of Stewartsville, Pa., was driving the Harley-Davidson. He suffered serious injuries and is in critical condition at Morristown Memorial Hospital, Jones said.

Smith, 36, from Patchogue, N.Y., was also transported to Morristown Memorial, but is in stable condition, Jones said.

The crash occurred at mile marker 28 in Bedminster Township. State police in Perryville are asking any witnesses to contact them at 908-730-7042.
